The First Major System Software Update Is Here!

Sony Interactive Entertainment is finally allowing us to save our PlayStation 5 games to an external USB drive. Better late than never.

Sony has announced on the PlayStation Blog that the PlayStation 5 will be released on June 14. The month of April will be available : Back up PlayStation 5 games to compatible external USB drives – This feature now allows you to transfer PlayStation 5 games from the console’s internal memory to extended USB storage. It’s a great way to expand the storage capacity of your PlayStation 5 console, and you can easily copy PlayStation 5 games to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It’s faster to reinstall PlayStation 5 games from an extended USB drive than to reboot or copy them from your hard drive.

Because PlayStation 5 games are designed to run on the console’s super-fast SSD, you can’t play them with an extended USB drive. PlayStation 5 games also cannot be downloaded directly to extended USB drives (SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps, 250GB to 8TB; SuperSpeed 5/10/20Gbps). However, games that you transfer or copy to the internal memory will be updated automatically if necessary. In addition, for some games that support this option, you can choose which game modes to set (e.g. Campaign or Multiplayer). As previously announced, the PlayStation 5 console will support memory expansion with M.2 drives in the future. We are currently working on this feature, Sony wrote.

There are also new social features for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4: Information sharing between generations – PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players can now share information when chatting at parties. This means that PlayStation 5 users can show their friends on the PlayStation 4 console their game screen or even try out PlayStation 5 games via Share Play, and vice versa. Options include the ability to share the screen with a friend, virtually transfer a controller to a friend, or virtually transfer a second controller to play together.

Play Session Request – On PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, you can now see a list of your friends’ co-op play sessions, allowing you to play more with other players. The Request to Join option also serves as a shortcut for sending a game invitation, reducing the time it takes to join games with friends. In the Privacy Settings menu, you can change who can communicate with you through parties, games, and messages.

Back to the PlayStation 5: The game’s basic menu has been improved for faster access to important content and features. Now you can easily switch between games and friends to interact with existing games or see what your friends are doing online. You can also turn notifications on or off for each party you attend.

Mute or adjust volume of in-game chat – You can now quickly mute the in-game chat, muting the other player’s microphone and voice output. You can also easily adjust the individual volume of voice conversations of other players in the same chat room, so you don’t have to keep asking your friends to turn the microphone volume down or up. Preloading game updates – Once enabled by the developers, game updates will be preloaded onto your console when the auto update setting is enabled and your console is on or in standby. This way you can play the latest version of the game as soon as the update is available. Customize your library – With the ability to browse or hide games from your library, it’s now easier to find content and customize the look of your library.

Screen zoom – You can now adjust the screen zoom to your preference in the Settings menu. New Trophy Settings and Statistics Screen – The trophy level that results in an automatic screenshot or video clip can now be adjusted – so you can choose to have photos or videos taken and saved only if you achieve higher level trophies, such as Gold or Platinum. We’re also introducing a new trophy status screen for players, where you can see an overview of your level and trophy status at a glance, Sony writes.

Finally, the PlayStation app was also revealed in detail: We’re also introducing some new features to the PlayStation App that will make it easier to connect to your console remotely. We recently introduced the ability to save products to your wishlist, receive notifications when your friends are online, and change your console’s online status. We’ll be rolling out more features in the coming weeks, including the ability to participate in a PlayStation 5 multiplayer session from within the app, manage storage for PlayStation 5 consoles, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter products in the PlayStation Store, the company added.

But the road to improvement is always long.
